Hockey Development Committee (HDC)

The Hockey Development Committee (HDC) plays a vital role in fostering a positive and inclusive environment for young players to learn, grow, and enjoy the game of hockey. The HDC creates and manages the development structure for HYHA's youth teams based on the guidelines and rules of MN Hockey District 3, MN Hockey, and USA Hockey.

HDC Objectives and responsibilities

  • Providing opportunities for players to develop their hockey skills and knowledge of the game through quality coaching, training programs, and opportunities for individual skill development. Skill development programs will cater to players of different ages and skill levels.
  • Creating a guideline for skills that should be learned at each age and level to develop building blocks from Mite through Bantam/High school preparation. These guidelines, and their corresponding programs (ie: drills, coaching, video review, etc.), are determined by the HDC and based on the principals of the American Development Model (ADM). They are introduced to coaches at the mite level, and reiterated each year through coaching workshops.
  • Promoting values such as sportsmanship, teamwork, respect, and fair play among players, coaches, and parents. The committee will focus on instilling good behavior both on and off the ice. The HDC will implement training and/or workshops for coaches and parents when necessary.

Board President: Caitlin Hillen

Contact

For Caitlin, HYHA is more than just a hockey program—it’s a home. As a parent of three players, she has spent the last five seasons on the board in roles such as Treasurer and Ice-Scheduling Liaison, witnessing firsthand how the sport shapes young lives.

Caitlin’s dedication to community-based sports is rooted in her academic background at the University of New Hampshire. There, while working in the Athletics office for the men’s and women’s hockey programs, she authored a senior thesis on the vital role youth sports play in shaping a child’s life path. This philosophy was solidified during a professional tenure with USA Hockey. After earning the prestigious Brian Fishman Internship, Caitlin spent four years managing programs for the national governing body, including the 2005-06 Pre-Olympic Tour for the U.S. Women’s National Team. Whether at the national office in Colorado Springs or traveling with the National Team Development Program (NTDP), Caitlin saw that even elite athletes perform best when they are part of a tight-knit, supportive community that plays for one another.

Holding a USA Hockey CEP Level 1 certification, Caitlin understands the technical side of the game but remains focused on the bigger picture: ensuring every kid in Hopkins has a place to develop. As President, she is committed to leveraging her national-level expertise to cement a culture of hard work, inclusivity, and momentum, ensuring HYHA continues to be the heart of the Hopkins community for years to come.

Andy brings a lifelong passion for goaltending to the Hopkins Youth Hockey Association. Growing up playing goal in Edina, Andy began coaching summer goalie clinics at just 15 years old and continued through high school, developing an early instinct for teaching the position.

After college, Andy extended that commitment to the ice by helping with tryouts and goalie clinics for Northern Colorado Youth Hockey before returning to Minnesota. From 2011 to 2013, he served as the goalie coach for Hopkins High School. Since then he has been coaching goalies within HYHA, working with players across every level from Mites through Bantams.

Andy's coaching philosophy is simple: every kid deserves the resources and opportunities to reach their full potential. That belief has guided his work both on the ice and in the community. He served five years on the HYHA Board before joining the Hockey Development Committee. Andy also serves as the Goalie Coordinator for District 3 Hockey, representing the interests of goalies across the district.

Off the ice, Andy has spent over two decades building and leading a successful mortgage business, managing a team of more than a dozen employees in addition to his own production.
