New Season - Same Standards of Play Established for 2006-2007 Season

As you may be aware, there were new standards of play for youth hockey developed for the 2006-2007 season.  While there were no rule changes, how the rules are called have changed.  Much like the NHL in 2005-2006, impediment penalties (hooking/tripping/holding) will be strictly enforced.  USA Hockey has provided a video demonstrating the new "Standards of Play".  The video is available in streaming format on the USA Hockey website.  Because of the changes it is important that coaches, parents, and players view this video for an understanding of how officials will call games this year.   The video includes very clear examples of what will be legal / illegal.

Helmets to be Mandatory for Coaches starting in the 2006 - 2007 Season

From John Perry, MN Hockey - District 3 Director:  At the Minnesota Hockey State Meeting held last weekend (01/14), a motion to require all coaches to wear a helmet during on-ice activities was passed. The requirement goes into effect for the 2006-2007 season. Currently, the Minnesota Hockey Handbook "strongly" encourages this practice; however, it is not mandatory. Beginning next year, this practice becomes mandatory.

HYHA's commitment to the safety of our children also extends to our coaches and while not mandatory until next year, HYHA encourages all coaches to begin wearing helmets while conducting any on-ice activities.

Make Sure Your CEP Card Is Valid!

There is a growing problem with Coaches who are certifying their CEP cards to the next level of Certification. ALL CEP LEVEL STICKERS (1, 2, etc.) MUST BE LOCATED ON THE COACHES CARD TO VERIFY COMPLETION FOR LEVELS OBTAINED!

For example, Coach had a CEP card with a level 1 sticker in place that expires 12/31/07. Coach doesn't have his card with him (or lost it) when he goes to take his classes. Coach takes level 2 certification classes. Upon successful completion, he is then given a new CEP card with the level 2 sticker placed on the card.

This Coach's card is invalid and will not be accepted at roster verification Why? There is no indication on the new card that this Coach has ever completed a level 1 certification. If the proper stickers are not obtained by this Coach will not be allowed on the ice or on the bench for the remainder of the season!!!!

It is not the responsibility of the Association Registrar nor the District Registrar to "look up the Coaches CEP information" online with USA Hockey for verification of completed levels. It is the Coach's responsibility to acquire the proper documentation and/or "stickers" for their card to ensure they are accepted at roster verification.

To obtain stickers to revalidate CEP cards, Coaches must contact District 3 Coach-in-Chief, Dave Margenau. Dave's contact information:
